Sean Tevis Kicks Ass, and You Win! [UPDATED]

"Toto, I don't think we're in Creationist Kansas anymore!"

Sean Tevis is an Information Architect and fellow netroots geek who decided to run against Arlen Siegfreid, the current State Representative.

Tevis

You supported Sean Tevis, and you won.

Representative Siegfreid is:

Pro:

o  Creationism in the classroom
o  Government domestic surveillance

Anti:

o  Choice
o  Gay
o  Free Speech

Sean was, like we all are, revolted by the views of his representative.

...so he registered to run and drew an xkcd comic...

He had the wild idea that he would use the Internet to raise funds, and he would look to get $8.34 from 3,000 people.  Unheard of!  No Kansas State Representative had ever gotten more than 644 donations!

In 37.25 hours he got 3,000.

In about 48 hours, he is up to 4,662.

Go Sean!!

For everyone who has said "Obama's Internet fundraising won't do anything for downticket Dems!"  I just want to say:

I told you so.

Either there is nothing going on that is different from Election 1956, nothing changed from the days of Big Money and Big Influence, nothing changed from the Good Old Days when you could buy yourself a politician by donating the money he needs to get into office (or to stay there)...

Either that, or things have changed.

And yeah buddy, they've changed.  You changed them.  The Internet changed them.  Or, more precisely, you and your newfound ability to actually be directly involved in the most tried and true aspects of Old School politics has opened the doors of the New School.

From now on, if someone wants to represent the people they will need to speak to them.

From now on, if someone wants to represent the people they will need to listen to them.

From now on, if someone wants to represent the people they will need to ask them for their support.  Not the support of the richest people in their district.  Not the support of the corporations whose interests may run counter to their constituents.  Not the traditional donors with their well-worn Rolodex and jaded agendas.

You.

Congratulations.  You win.

Hi Chris

That's nicely done and well written. Thank you so much for taking an active interest in helping my campaign!

You beat me to the update. (2.00 / 4)

The last diary on Tevis only lasted 5 minutes on the Rec List, perhaps this one'll stay up slightly longer.

Re: You beat me to the update. (2.00 / 4)

You're the one who told me about him.

A friend of mine - cynical to the bone, wrote the very first firewall - he donated to Trevis as well.

I just love this guy.  I want to see it all over the news!

Sean's also a blogger. (2.00 / 4)

And not in the token "my staffer/volunteer writes a blog post in my name" sense, in the actual "blogged before deciding to run for office" kind of way.  He's also a Digg/Reddit user.

This guy's seriously "one of us."

Thanks, this guy struck a chord with (2.00 / 3)

a lot of people.  Very very cynical friend of mine told me today he donated, too.

Good for you, never mind the tips, I just gave the guy $USD8.38 and good luck to him, too.

Any candidate who can author a decent comic strip is my kinda' guy.

I'll bet he doesn't get a lot of donations from Australia.  Ain't the Internet cool?

When I want to start a really (2.00 / 3)

contenscious conversation I'll start it with:

"the Internet solves all of the world's problems"

I believe that, too.  It has already saved my best friend's life (Internet technologies=Human Genome Project finished 25 years early=Novartis invents Gleevec=Bill doesn't die of luekemia).

The greatest wonder of the world in the new millennia and a friend of free-thinkers everywhere.  God bless DARPA and all it's minions.

You say that now; wait until one of DARPA's creations forces YOU to be its minion.

Re: When I want to start a really (2.00 / 2)

I was being sardonic, to be sure, but at least the Cold War left some useful legacy to us free-thinkers (I got an ex-CCCP micrometer as well which I would never have been able to afford otherwise.  Yeah, that's scary.  And no coffins coming home either, eh?  Better get our War Powers and Domestic Surveillance legislation in order, and pronto.

The Pen is Mightier than the Sword (2.00 / 1)

When that was penned the scariest thing on earth was a guy covered in sheetmetal sitting on top of a large grsss-eating mammal.

It's no less true today.

Among the most knowledgable (2.00 / 1)

and cynical folks I know (the guy who invented the first firewall, done lots of gov't/DARPA work, etc.) - even he donated to Sean.

The Pen.

The Sword.

Re: Sean Tevis Kicks Ass, and You Win! (2.00 / 1)

Gave my $8.38..a reasonable donation...

Mojoed for being reasonable (2.00 / 1)

which is not as uncommon as many believe.

Just think about it - 3,000 is not a large number in almost any jurisdiction.  When this become the common method (read: "about now"), every candidate will reach out to the public for support.

Imagine.

Re: Sean Tevis Kicks Ass, and You Win! [UPDATED] (2.00 / 1)

in re your update ... I'm seeing a trend of this with the progressive candidates this cycle - a lot of the congressional candidates are directly responding to inquires.  your diary was spot on!!
